Fact. There’s a reason people flock to them from all over the world. The sense of adventure, wilderness, and also the sense of opportunity and community. Living in a mountain town, you can be sure to make amazing friends and memories for the rest of your life.

Small businesses are a key part of the community of mountain towns; they are what makes it possible for most of us to live out here, away from the hustle and big business of cities. Running a business in a mountain town means sharing Main Street with your friends and neighbors, and that’s something to be celebrated.

But, running a small business is hard, and running one in a mountain town is no exception. Business owners we’ve spoken to say they struggle to keep up with the demands of marketing their business to the thousands of tourists who visit each year. Think about it, you’ve just set up a new business providing a great service that you want people to know about and tell their friends, so you invest a ton of time and effort in running a social media marketing campaign that gets your brand attention… only to have half of the people you told pack up and leave town at the end of the week when their vacation is over!

So frustrating! For many it makes social media and online marketing seem daunting, even impossible. It’s just simply too time consuming, BUT it doesn’t have to be.

We’ve come up with our three top tips for mountain town businesses who want to take their social media to the next level.

1. Know your community

What makes running a business in a mountain town unique is balancing the small community atmosphere with the need to promote and market to a constantly changing crowd of visitors. We know that most people visit a mountain town to experience the outdoors and extreme sports, and maybe do a little shopping. Think about who visits at what time of the year, and what they want. What are they likely to be talking about on their social media? Knowing the topics of conversation and the goals of visitors means you can tap into their online conversations and be a part of their stories, which leads to point two:

2. Play to your strengths

Growing and maintaining a network of followers on social media relies on a steady stream of useful and engaging content. That’s where living in a mountain town is perfect. There are always stories of adventure, of community and of general awesomeness floating around. Business owners in Canmore have lives outside of work, and showing and sharing aspects of those lives can be a great way to show a human side to a business, especially when so many people who visit are envious that you get to live here!

But sharing and showing awesome content, and mixing it with useful and clear business knowledge, doesn’t have to be approached like you would your social life (ie: on a -post-it-as-it-happens basis). On to tip 3:

3. Plan

At Carmella, we believe in pro-active digital marketing. Knowing what you want to share with your followers (and it should always be a mix of cool, informative personal and professional content), when you want to share and how often you want to repeat certain points (ie: advertising for an event, or a new product) can all be worked out in advance.

It might take some time to get, for example, a months worth of content organized and scheduled but, trust us, not having to worry about social media marketing for a month will free up your business schedule in a big way.

The great thing about mountain towns is that we, as residents and business owners, life awesome and engaging lives which attract visitors to our town. We can share our experiences and increase brand awareness on a regular basis with just a little bit of planning, organization, and scheduling. At the end of the day, ticking one more business job of your “to-do” list means more time outside, and that’s got to mean something!
